Cape Weligama

Where trade winds carried legendary explorers like Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta and Fa-Hsien past Sri Lanka's soaring southern cliffs on some of history's most celebrated nautical journeys, Cape Weligama has become the most celebrated resort along this fabled island's palm-fringed shores.

The golden sun rising from the east. The morning calling of our peacocks. The rolling ocean below. The coconut trees swaying to the salty breeze. Pause and reset. From the palm-fringed shores, tropical gardens, and pampering villas and suites that blend into our headland, Cape Weligama is your own slice of paradise. The gateway to southern Sri Lanka envelops you in a world of culture, community and cuisine.

Location

The resort's location is a fine one, perched high on a palm-dominated headland with magnificent Indian Ocean and coastal views, just a few miles from surf-orientated Weligama. The ocean panoramas are breathtaking and the owners have made the most of the hotel's location by eking out superb clifftop viewpoints for drinks or private dining. The only downside is that there isn't really a beach – from the thin slivers of sand either side of the headland you can swim if the seas are calm. Galle's 17th-century fort – a regional highlight – is a 40-minute drive away.

Style and Character

The resort encompasses the entire 12-acre headland and its meticulously landscaped gardens brim with exotic jewel-hued flowers and trees. Many of the rooms are vast freestanding villas clustered in twos or threes in separate walled gardens with emerald lawns and 15-metre swimming pools. As such you barely see other guests around the resort except in the restaurant or by the pool. Buggies whizz you around the resort, however nowhere is too far to walk.

Service and Facilities

Staffing is superb. There are no on-call butlers yet room service is seamless and the staff are prompt when responding to requests. The chefs visibly engage with guests in the restaurant. The 60-metre crescent-shaped Moon Pool for the over 12s champions the most spectacular coastal views. Below is a well-equipped gym and a casual surf bar that spills onto a terrace where pathways lead to magical ocean lookout spots. There's also a separate family pool, a spa villa and a watersports centre offering cycling trips, surfing, whale watching and diving

Rooms

Common to all room types are distinct custom-designed furnishings, plush linen on king-sized or twin beds and understated bathrooms with walk-in steam rooms/showers and freestanding bathtubs. The starting category suites sit next to the lower family pool and have quite limited sea. Villas offer more privacy and potentially better views depending upon the type you book, yet are all extremely spacious – hallways lead to a vast bedroom and into a similarly huge bathroom with a walk-in wardrobe, and their big verandas are designed for dining and lounging. Rooms have minibars, coffee machines and tea-making facilities as well as Sonos speakers and a Smart TV loaded with a big collection of categorised movies and television shows.

Food and Drink

The main restaurant is positioned at the top of the cape with panoramic south easterly views. It's a brilliant spot for a sunrise breakfast of top-notch eggs Benedict or Sri Lankan hoppers. The menu champions progressive Sri Lankan and contemporary pan Asian dishes – think spice crusted lamb and seared tuna in cinnamon wood smoke. For lunch, go for the Jaffna okra curry and enjoy it in your suite or villa, an experience that feels less like room service and more like private dining. Try the Chef's Table too – an interactive experience where the chefs cook their taster menu right in front of you. The clifftop lookouts are super for sundowner sipping.
